Pain
On the day of the surgery, it is normal to feel mild to moderate pain. Please take the prescribed pain medication before the anesthetic wears off. Most of the time you can exchange the prescribed pain reliever for an over-the-counter medicine after the first 24 hours. Avoid aspirin and aspirin-containing medication for 3 days prior to and 3 days following your surgery.
Bleeding
Expect blood-tinged saliva for a day or two. Do not vigorously rinse, spit or drink through a straw. If fresh bleeding occurs apply firm pressure to the bleeding site with a moist gauze or a tea bag for ten minutes. If it continues please call the office.
Swelling
Swelling may occur following periodontal or dental implant surgery. Occasionally mild bruising may follow the surgery. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face in the area of the surgery as soon as possible following the appointment.
Are You in Need of Exceptional Oral Surgery Care?
Activity
Avoid all strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours after your surgery. Should you experience bleeding at any time following the surgery, stop exercising.
Tobacco
Tobacco use in any form causes poor wound healing, prolongs your recovery and jeopardizes the success of your surgery. Do not smoke on the day of your surgery.
Diet/Oral Hygiene
It is essential to eat and clean as you normally would do. Use non-surgical areas for your chewing. Good oral hygiene starting immediately following the surgery is critical for a successful surgical outcome. Brush and clean as you normally would with a focus on the surgical site.
